Bandcamp Day (Fri 6th Feb)

So, tomorrow is the first Bandcamp Friday to take place for a little while.

This is an institution I'm very fond of, partly because it represents a rare example of a profit-making company running a promotion explicitly based around reducing their own revenue. Very off-trend for the 2020s, or indeed ever, I daresay. (I keep waiting for them to knock it on the head for precisely this reason, but dates are now locked in until the end of 2026 - see link above - so we're at least safe until then, barring changes of ownership/policy in the meantime.)

So, for the time being, these revenue-free days will allow me to continue reaping the benefits of what I believe remains a brilliantly utlitarian, egalitarian and user friendly platform for exploring and proselytising non-mainstream music, without worrying about a portion of my dough ending up in the pockets of the Hedge Fund chancers who bought out Bandcamp a few years back, slashing the workforce and nixing their union in the process.

Admittedly, compressing about ten weeks of music purchasing into a single day can prove a bit inconvenient... but if I'm careful to save my pennies in advance, it's not really too much of a bother. I tend to think of it as the modern day equivalent of my standard MO back in my late teens / early '20s - hitting Selectadisc and spending £100+ on as many CDs as I could carry during rare visits to London or Nottingham.

Naturally though, all of tomorrow's purchases will be digital ones, for the grimly practical reasons that, a) vinyl costs far too much, b) I have no space left to store any more of it, and c) since I invested in a decent DAC (= the magic rosetta stone which allows computers and old hi-fi speakers to make friends), playing stuff off the laptop sounds better anyway.

By the end of tomorrow, you should be able to check out what I chose to pile up at the virtual counter on my Bandcamp collection page, but in case anyone's of a mind to get involved during the day itself, below is an unedited list of all the URLs I intend to hit the 'buy' button on, presented with no additional comment or apology.
